Fall '07
Fall is fast approaching; School's in session and not one blast of refreshing breeze has hit me to make me think its football season. You can say that again--It's hot! Many of y'all have mental snapshots the summer of '07. Some Happy--maybe some not so happy--that we will be recorded and file away to be shared many years from now. The highlight of my family's summer, as hot as it was, was traveling to Houma, Louisiana, 45 minutes Southwest of New Orleans on a high school mission trip. That's 33 teens, 9 adults, one bus driver and my whole family all together for 6 days.

The Gulf Coast, still somewhat ravaged after 2 years, revealed to us that spirits down there are still tender. What I found was that connecting with new friends in a far off place that have experienced the trauma of a double hurricane (Katrina and Rita one month apart), 16 hours away from my bed and my air conditioned home was the best tonic for the soul there is for me, my boys, my wife and our new traveling buddies from Charlotte. Believe me days before we left for Houma thoughts went through my mind like. Should I have just taken our family to the beach or to Chicago to visit my Mother-in-law (and watch a Cubs Game at Wrigley). By golly I never would have thought that the Bayou heat; the smell of painting a house for Captain Pierre (a Cajun Tour Boat Guide), the chaos and laughter of the Houma children would qualify as the Best Family Vacation ever. The lasting images our vans showing up at Senators Circle, a subsidized housing community, and the Kids flying out the screen doors chasing us down the street like were the Pied Piper were awesome. Our anxieties of not being able to make a difference for families and kids in a neighborhood unknown loomed over us, but the kids, with their excitement transformed our anxiety into hope and joy for each of us to carry forward forever as a testimony.
What does connecting with the folks of Houma, Louisiana have to with the business of selling, leasing & developing real estate? As marketing director of our Company, I looked at our mailing list and realize as Charlotte continues to grow that there are a good many of you I dont know, but would like to. The typically inventory mailers reach the trash can as quick as they hit the Inbox. If we can connect in other ways it might strike up new commonalities amongst us.
